Gautrain is an 80-kilometre mass rapid transit railway system under construction in Gauteng Province, South Africa. When complete, the system will connect Johannesburg and Pretoria with a fast and efficient rail transit system, alleviating major peak hour traffic on the freeway network, particularly the N1. In addition, Gautrain will also provide an effective link to OR Tambo International airport, allowing public transport access to Africa’s busiest airport.

In order to enable the Gautrain link to cross the N1 at John Vorster and the N14 at Jean Avenue in Centurion, two large balance cantilever structures were required. With two phases of post tensioning to be carried out, Freyssinet supplied in excess of 800no 19C15 anchors with associated sheathing and strand and provided supervision and equipment to enable the main contractor to carry out the construction phase stressing works. In the second phase, Freyssinet installed over 200km of strand into 60no Freyssinet 37C15 anchorages for the permanent works.
